Last few weeks I have been working with one exceptional guy from Quest in a project of introducing one of the Quest tools into our company. Because he was very good at his job, knew lots of things about subject we are talking about, I went to check his LinkedIn account and found out this interesting and very good forged role name - (enterprise) customer success manager. And thought how this is very good thing, very much better then some kind of technical support, customer support etc, because customer success is what customer really wants. Customer does not need support, he usually is not interested in process(or he is interested but this is not his primary wish), customer wants success with this product, service, monitoring tool. Customer wants that this tool bring him success. So, this role, customer success manager, reflects, if it is properly done, the description of the goal which customer and customer success manager wants to achieve.
I've been seeing in company I've worked for where people spent lots of energy and lots of good will to help client\customer, but now I am realizing that the issue was that they did not have properly designed goal, and this is customer success. And when customer is successful, Your service, product, whatever, will be success as well. And also, for me, it would be good goal redefinition if goal is moved from "we are trying to sell something to customer" to "we are helping our customer to succeed" - from sales (which I do not like at all!) to help. But this should not be only in paper or in words, company really needs to believe in that, that it really wants to help its customer.
