I've worked with dozens of people who tried to be what others wanted them to be, and got fired or got slow-tracked anyway. You can't win as long as you are playing someone else's game. That was my own experience as well. I tried to get ahead by conforming, and it didn't work for me, I was unhappy and I wasn't getting the rewards. Since abandoning that effort and endeavoring to be more authentic, I have been much happier, and after a helluva learning curve, I'm starting to enjoy more material rewards as well. "
