Combination of both brings the best results, for me. I can not speak generally.
In my case, I need experience to feel how some thing is suitable for me, do I like it or not, are we good fit or not. But experience without contemplation does not bring wisdom. So, once experienced, I am analyzing that experience and comparing it with my current knowledge, self awareness and expectations.
I am not able to speculate correctly about some thing if I did not experience it. I would generate false conclusions, and wrong decision, based only on mental speculations.
I would say, that in my case, 50% of experience and 50% of contemplation (learning through non-experience) is the combination which brings the "best" results, or I would say, results I feel most comfortable with.
